 (1) खिसकते पत्थर – डेथ वैली, कैलिफोर्निया

              कैलिफोर्निया की डेथ वैली में कुछ पत्थरों का खुद ब खुद खिसकना नासा के लिए भी अबूझ पहेली बनी हुई है। रेसट्रैक प्लाया 2.5 मील उत्तर से दक्षिण और 1.25 मील पूरब से पश्चिम ततक बिल्कुल सपाट है। लेकिन यहां बिखरे पत्थर खुद ब खुद खिसकते रहते हैं। यहां ऐसे 150 से भी अधिक पत्थर हैं। हालांकि, किसी ने उन्हें आंखों से खिसकते नहीं देखा। सर्दियों में ये पत्थर करीब 250 मीटर से ज्यादा दूर तक खिसके मिलते हैं। 1972 में इस रहस्य को सुलझाने के लिए वैज्ञानिकों की एक टीम बनाई गई। टीम ने पत्थरों के एक ग्रुप का नामकरण कर उस पर सात साल अध्ययन किया। केरीन नाम का लगभग 317 किलोग्राम का पत्थर अध्ययन के दौरान जरा भी नहीं हिला। लेकिन जब वैज्ञानिक कुछ साल बाद वहां वापस लौटे, तो उन्होंने केरीन को 1 किलोमीटर दूर पाया। अब वैज्ञानिकों का यह मानना है कि तेज रफ्तार से चलने वाली हवाओं के कारण ऐसा होता है।

 

(2) इंटरनल फ्लेम फॉल्स, ऑर्चेड पार्क, न्यूयार्क, 

यहां पर एक छोटा सा झरना बहता है, जिसमें एक जलती हुई लौ दिखाई देती है। देखने वालों को आश्चर्य होता है कि आखिर यह लौ जल कैसे रही है। शोध करने के बाद वैज्ञानिकों को पता चला की वहां पर चट्टानों के नीचे से मीथेन गैस निकलती है। संभवतया 20 वि शताब्दी की शुरुआत में किसी ने इस मीथेन गैस में आग लगा दी। जब से लगातार जल रही है। भारत में भी हिमाचल के कांगड़ा में स्तिथ माता के एक प्रमुख शक्ति पीठ ज्वालामुखी देवी के मंदिर में नौ प्राकर्तिक ज्वाला प्राचीन काल से निरंतर जल रही है।
